The Espenwis residential project features angled building structures that create new sheltered spaces and pathways on a sloping site. The design utilizes a networked modular pattern, optimally adapted to the site, which distinguishes it from the surrounding independent typologies. The development integrates with the new Stephanshorn Park and nearby walking paths, creating a generous green space that responds to the topography of the drumlin, an ice age relic. The staggered positioning of modules enhances views, ensures transparency, and allows for cold air flow.
The project includes 150 apartments, efficiently accessed via nine daylight stairwells. Most units have dual or triple orientation, daylight in bathrooms, and one to two balconies. The diverse mix includes 1.5- to 5.5-room apartments, maisonettes, and clusters.
Located on a traditional orchard hillside, the site preserves its distinctive topography as a key landscape element. Nesting opportunities on buildings and rich habitats promote biodiversity. Ground intervention is minimal, limited to necessary access and communal spaces, while permeable surfaces improve water drainage and microclimate. Pathways meander through fruit trees and shrubs, leading to scenic viewpoints at the drumlin peak, emphasizing a slow, mindful experience. Expanded gravel paths serve as small plazas and emergency access routes, while gravel islands with varied compositions reflect underlying geological sediments. These spaces, with multi-stem pioneer trees and ruderal plants, create engaging play and social areas, fostering a sense of community and well-being.
